African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary/ South Africa

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) was established in 2006 by Wilfred Chivell. The mission of the trust is to Discover, Protect and Educate, as well as celebrate the amazing marine bio-diversity of the Overstrand area. Wilfred believes that actions speak louder than words.

The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS), a project of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, opened in 2015. This state of the art, rehabilitation centre, provides temporary care to local marine avian species, with a special focus on the endangered African penguin.

The DICT & APSS works closely together with CapeNature, the provincial conservation authority, to restore and rehabilitate the Dyer Island habitat thereby re-establishing the island as the main and prolific breeding ground for the African penguin and in an attempt to prevent the extinction of this iconic species.

July 10-15, Dyer Island, South Africa

Finally, we headed to Gansbaai along the South African coast where a few remaining critically endangered African penguins struggle to live and breed on Dyer Island. Wilfred Chivell, founder of the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary has been passionately fighting for their protection, rescue and rehabilitation. Our panotriptych will show that when there is a will, there is a way, even for the forgotten African penguins.
